Technical Summary

LabSpace defines an open architecture for flexible and scalable collaboration. It consists of several levels of abstraction, each designed to simplify creation and take advantage of existing standards. The network layer is the foundation for the communication mechanisms. The module layer brings together a myriad of useful tools. On top of these is the laboratory layer, which, combined with the playback engine, creates a shared, permanent space with a sense of history. The result is a powerful and intuitive architecture focused on the user and the user's needs for distributed collaboration.

``So, um, Jane. Got any plans for dinner tonight?''
``Don't ask, Brian. You're in San Francisco and I'm in Chicago. And,'' she grinned, ``that's fine with me.''
